Competition for top AI researchers is intensifying to unprecedented levels at silicon Valley.companies such as Openai and Google.
San Francisco – The contest in Silicon Valley, which controls artificial intelligence, is unfolding in a new courthouse: Superstar Researcher.
Scramble to attract top talent and keep them happy has always been a hallmark of the tech industry, but since ChatGPT launched in late 2022, recruitment has escalated to the level of professional athletes.
“The AI Labs approach is adopted like a game of chess,” said Ariel Herbert-Voss, CEO of cybersecurity startup Runsybil and former Openai researcher who took part in the talent battle after launching his own company. “They want to move as quickly as possible, so they want to pay a large amount of money to candidates with professional and complementary expertise that resembles the game’s production. They say, “Do I have enough Luke? Absolute Knight?”
Companies including Openai and Google are eager to take part in races and create the best AI models.
Noam Brown, one of the researchers in complex mathematics and science reasoning in Openai’s recent AI breakthrough, said he found himself courted by the elites of Tech when he explored employment opportunities in 2023. Elon Musk will also call on candidates for his AI company Xai to close down, the two who spoke to him. Xai did not respond to requests for comment.
In the end, Brown said he chose Openai because Openai was willing to put the resources behind the work that he was excited about.
“It wasn’t actually the best option I had,” he said, explaining that compensation was not the most important thing for many researchers. According to seven sources familiar with the issue, it has not stopped companies from throwing millions of dollars of bonuses and wage packages at star researchers.
Several top open eye researchers who expressed interest in joining SSI, the new company of former chief scientist Ilya Satsukevar, were offered a holding bonus of $2 million, along with a stock increase of over $20 million if they stayed. Some people need to stay for a year to get the entire bonus. SSI and Openai declined to comment.
Other Openai researchers who submitted offers from 11 labs have received at least $1 million in bonuses to stay at Openai, two sources told Reuters. Top Openai researchers regularly receive reward packages of over $10 million per year, sources say.
Google Deepmind has provided top researchers with a $20 million annual reward package, awarding AI researchers a Cycle Off Equity Grant specifically, reducing their authority to stock packages for some stock packages to three years, rather than the usual four years. Google declined to comment.
In contrast, top engineers at large tech companies receive an average annual salary of $281,000 and $261,000 in stock, according to clreghing.io, a company that tracks compensation in the tech industry.
AI Talent War
Talent has always been important in Silicon Valley, but what makes it different from the AI boom is that there are few people in this elite group. It can range from a few dozen to about 1000 depending on who you ask.
This is based on the belief that this very few “ICS” has made a major contribution to the development of large-scale language models, and today’s AI boom in technology is based on the success of AI models, so it can be successful.
“It’s true that 10x engineers are cool, but they care about 10,000x engineers/researchers,” Openai CEO Sam Altman tweeted in late 2023, implying that the best software engineers are 10x the average (10x), but now in the AI industry, the best researchers are on average 10,000 times (10,000 times).
Open’s chief technology officer Mira Murati’s departure in September later founded rival AI startups, but strengthened the AI talent war. Murati, known for his management skills and execution skills at Openai, recruited 20 Openai employees before announcing the company in February. She is currently seducing more researchers from Openai and other labs, with the team currently at around 60, two sources told Reuters. The company has no products on the market, but Murati is in the process of shutting down a record seed round based on the strength of the team. Murati’s representative declined to comment.
The rarity of talent forced companies to approach employment creatively. Zeki Data, a data company focused on identifying top AI talents, said it is employing sports industry data analytics techniques that are prevalent in the film “Moneyball” to identify promising but undiscovered talents. For example, Zeki’s data finds that humanity employs researchers with backgrounds in theoretical physics, while other AI companies are hiring individuals with backgrounds in quantum computing.
Humanity did not reply to requests for comment.
“In my team, Sebastian Bbeck, who left the role of joining OpenAI as Vice President of Microsoft’s Genai Research last year, said: “We’re now seeing an influx of talent from all fields. And some of these people are very smart and they’re making a difference.”
