Adobe Express introduces AI assistant for conversational content creation

Adobe announced a new AI assistant within Adobe Express during Adobe MAX in Los Angeles on October 28, 2025. Conversational interfaces allow users to generate and modify design elements through natural language commands. This beta release marks Adobe’s expansion of agent AI capabilities beyond enterprise applications and into consumer-facing creative platforms.

Express’s AI assistant works differently than traditional template-based design tools. The user describes the desired result in plain language, and the system selects the appropriate models, tools, and assets to perform the edit. Those requesting a “more tropical” aesthetic will see the Assistant replace images of mountains with leaves and flowers, control the saturation of surfaces, and display a color picker with an associated tropical palette. The system will make contextual suggestions, such as changing the font to match the new theme.

“Adobe Express’ new AI assistant was built to transform the way we create,” said Govind Balakrishnan, senior vice president and general manager of Adobe Express. “It removes obstacles, speeds up the process, and provides inspiration so you can create content that goes beyond templates to represent your unique brand, business, and vision.”

The Express Assistant’s technical architecture distinguishes it from competing tools through its layer-specific editing capabilities. Users can change individual design elements (fonts, images, backgrounds) while keeping components unchanged. This approach differs from generation tools, which require a complete regeneration when making adjustments. The assistant uses Adobe’s content intelligence and creative best practices trained by professional designers to interpret ambiguous requests.

Adobe surveyed 16,000 creators around the world before launch. According to the survey, 81% have used a generative AI experience like Adobe Express to create content they couldn’t create otherwise. More than 70% expressed interest in agent AI capabilities to advance their creative work.

Platforms that support AI assistants enable integration with chatbot platforms and provide multiple access points for conversation creation. Adobe also introduced the Dev MCP Server for Adobe Express add-ons, allowing developers to build features and integrations with conversational interfaces.

Enterprise features introduced to the AI Assistant include template locking, batch creation, and organization controls. These features allow you to extend content supply chain management to a broader workforce while maintaining brand consistency. Workday says non-designers can create professional visuals by explaining their requirements, making design more accessible without fear of complexity.

Sakura Martin, Dentsu’s global head of brand and design, said the enterprise approach gives confidence to employees without design experience and saves professional designers time on daily tasks. Features like locked templates and approval processes enable self-service content creation that aligns with brand guidelines.

Moria Fredrickson, vice president of brand and digital transformation at Lumen, says the agent is transformative for marketers accustomed to text. “This unlocks the creativity of marketers accustomed to text, allowing them to quickly develop fully-fledged, brand-based layouts without the need for design skills,” Fredrickson said.

This announcement follows Adobe’s September 10 launch of Experience Platform Agent Orchestrator for enterprise marketing automation. The platform includes six specialized agents for audience management, travel optimization, and analytics. More than 70% of eligible Adobe Experience Platform customers are already using AI assistants as a conversational interface for interacting with agents.

Adobe’s approach to AI in Express is based on several technical foundations. The system tailors first-party and third-party models for specific tasks. Adobe Express includes professional-quality assets and creative tools designed with accessibility in mind. The assistant applies creative workflows based on training from professional creatives who understand composition, color harmony, and font selection. The content expertise built into the system determines which visual assets drive engagement.

The Express platform targets a broader user base than Adobe’s professional Creative Cloud applications. Adobe’s marketing organization tested AI visibility optimization on its properties and saw a 5x increase in citations for Adobe Firefly and a 200% increase in visibility for Adobe Acrobat compared to competitors.

The AI Assistant beta launches on desktop for Adobe Express Premium subscribers. General availability expands access to all Express customers through the Firefly generated credit system. Additional credit packs will be available for purchase to enable more generative creation.

The timing of this release aligns with Adobe’s broader enterprise AI development. On October 9, the company announced B2B-specific agents such as Audience Agent, Journey Agent, and Data Insights Agent, which handle complex purchasing cycles. Cisco has tested these agents across sales and marketing operations.

Adobe maintains the most creator-friendly AI approach in the industry. The company positions AI as a tool, not a substitute for human creativity, and emphasizes respecting the rights of creators in developing generative AI capabilities. The company’s generative AI development begins with intellectual property considerations for content creators.

Express’s conversational authoring model differs from standalone generation tools in that it maintains integration with Adobe’s editing capabilities. Users can toggle between natural language interaction with the assistant and manual adjustments using sliders and color selectors. This hybrid approach provides flexibility for users who want precise control over certain elements, while others benefit from AI-assisted generation.

Adobe focuses on evolving templates rather than limiting them, addressing limitations common to accessible design tools. Templates provide a starting point, but a rigid template structure can limit creative expression. The AI assistant transforms templates into a dynamic foundation that allows you to change any element through interaction, removing technical barriers while maintaining design quality.

The platform’s understanding of design principles allows the assistant to maintain aesthetic consistency when implementing changes. Adjusting one element triggers related changes while maintaining visual harmony. When you change the color scheme, the system suggests complementary font adjustments and image processing. This context awareness distinguishes the Express Assistant from tools that literally execute commands without considering broader design implications.

Adobe’s consumer AI assistant is an extension of the conversational interfaces the company has introduced across its product portfolio. Experience Cloud introduced AI content optimization capabilities on September 16, 2024, enabling attribute-level performance insights and real-time experimentation. Journey Optimizer’s AI Assistant Content Accelerator generates on-brand assets that are optimized for your audience.

The market for accessible creative tools is growing as organizations require more content across channels. Traditional content supply chains struggle to meet high volume demand while maintaining quality and brand consistency. Conversational interfaces lower the barrier to content creation by removing the technical learning curve, but require new considerations around output quality and brand alignment.

Enterprise features planned for Express address organizations’ concerns about distributed content creation. Template locking prevents changes to protected branding elements while allowing flexibility in allowed areas. Batch creation allows you to scale the production of campaigns that require large numbers of variations. Approval workflows ensure content meets standards before publishing. These controls balance accessibility and governance, allowing broad participation in content creation without sacrificing oversight.

Adobe’s positioning of Express as a conversational canvas reflects a broader industry movement toward natural language interfaces for complex applications. This approach assumes that users can more easily articulate a desired result than by performing technical steps to achieve it. Translating intent into execution becomes the responsibility of the system, not the user’s technical challenge.

The timing of the announcement during Adobe MAX places Express Assistant within the broader ecosystem of AI-powered creative tools that Adobe introduced at the conference. The company positioned this release alongside updates to Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere, and Illustrator, highlighting the integration of AI across professional and accessible creative applications. This strategy accommodates a variety of skill levels and use cases while maintaining consistent AI capabilities across the portfolio.
