Amazon Web Services has hired former DataStax CEO Chet Kapoor as its new vice president of security services and observability, according to an internal email obtained by Business Insider.
Kapur will report directly to AWS CEO Matt Garman, who announced the move in a company-wide email on Monday. Kapoor will work alongside AWS CISO Amy Herzog. An AWS spokesperson confirmed the appointment.
Gurman said Kapur will lead efforts to strengthen AWS’ security products as it expands its AI business. The hire underscores AWS’ efforts to strengthen security around its AI products.
At DataStax, Kapur oversaw Astra DB, a database built on the open source Apache Cassandra project, and led its integration with real-time AI capabilities, Garman said in an email.
This move marks the latest leadership change at AWS. The company has lost some executives over the past year, including Matt Wood, vice president of AI, and Vassi Philomin, vice president of generative AI, while adding executives such as former Microsoft executive Julia White as head of marketing.
The full email from Garman is below.
Teams, security and operational excellence in the cloud is extremely important to all of our customers. As we have seen our customers’ cloud adoptions become more complex over time, providing superior external security and observability services has become a more important part of our business, and AI is completely changing what is possible and what is needed in this space. To lead us into the next phase of product innovation and growth, we are pleased to announce today that Chet Kapoor is joining us as Vice President of Security Services and Observability. Chet will report to me, and Gee Rittenhouse, Nandini Ramani, Georgia Sitaras, and Brad Marshall will report to Chet. I would also like to take a moment to thank Kurt Kufeld, who has been leading the way in this field. Kurt is rotating to take on new challenges in other parts of Amazon. I would like to thank him for the strong leadership and operational rigor he has brought to AWS over the past 10 years. Chet has had a distinguished career in technology leadership, bringing extensive experience in AI, platform services, and enterprise solutions, most recently serving as Chairman and CEO of DataStax. While there, he pioneered the development of real-time AI capabilities integrated with Astra DB, revolutionizing the way enterprises build and deploy AI-powered applications at scale. Prior to that, he led Apigee as CEO, successfully transforming the company into a leading API management platform until its acquisition by Google in 2016. His previous experience includes executive positions at IBM and BEA Systems. Chet brings a customer-focused mindset and deep understanding of AI and platform services to drive strategic initiatives across the security services, governance, and operations portfolio. I look forward to watching him engage with our team, customers, and partners as we continue to innovate and expand our security and observability offerings. Please join us in welcoming Chet to AWS. Matt
