artificial intelligence news

The European Commission has launched an antitrust investigation into Google’s use of online content to train its AI systems. Regulators will investigate whether publishers and YouTube creators are being forced into unfair terms and whether competitors are being blocked from accessing similar training data. The study aims to assess whether Google is inhibiting competition in the AI field.

EU questions Google’s AI overview and use of YouTube data for Gemini model

New Delhi: The European Commission has launched a formal antitrust investigation into Google into how it uses online content, including material from publishers and YouTube creators, to train its artificial intelligence systems. Regulators want to know whether the tech company is giving it an unfair advantage in the fast-growing AI market. This is yet another reminder that the race to build smarter AI models raises tough legal and business questions.

Many creators and news organizations are concerned about their work being fed into AI without their consent. The European Commission appears to be responding to those concerns. Future research will examine whether Google’s approach risks undermining competition and limiting the options of people building rival AI systems.

EU questions Google’s access to content from publishers and creators

The study examines two areas in detail. First, Google’s AI features in search, such as AI Overview and AI Mode. These use generative AI to create summaries and chatbot-like responses right above the search results. The City of Brussels is asking whether the content was generated using the publisher’s data without appropriate payment or refusal options. Many publishers rely heavily on Google search traffic to survive.

The second area focuses on YouTube. Creators upload millions of videos every day and must consent to YouTube using their data for a wide variety of purposes, including training generative models. There is no separate compensation for this. At the same time, other companies are not allowed to use YouTube videos to train their own AI tools. The European Commission is trying to find out whether that means Google has a head start over other companies.

EU officials say content creators should have more control over how their work is used with AI. Teresa Rivera said the study aims to protect values such as diverse media, open access to information, and a vibrant creative landscape. He also said that advances in AI must not come at the expense of the principles at the heart of society.

Google rebels

Google says the complaints could slow innovation. In response, a spokesperson said the market was more competitive than ever and Europeans should take advantage of new technology. The company has also previously said that using YouTube content will help improve the experience for creators and viewers, including through AI applications.

Users want better AI tools. But creators don’t want their work to train those tools without fair evaluation. Even small artists now worry that their uploads are being turned into fuel for AI models that may compete with them.

big picture

This is not the first time Google has clashed with EU authorities. The company has faced multiple investigations in recent years, from fines for digital advertising to disputes over search and app rules. Other major U.S. tech companies, including Meta, Apple and Elon Musk’s X, are in similar predicaments.

The committee warned that there is no deadline to conclude this investigation. It may take months or even years. The results matter far beyond Europe, as AI companies around the world rely heavily on internet data to build smarter tools.
