Introducing the National Partnership on AI and Collaboration in India

We believe that AI will be the most transformative technology in human history, and that it should be deployed in a way that benefits humanity as a whole. This requires deep and strategic collaboration between cutting-edge AI labs, governments, academia, and civil society.

To realize the full potential of AI, Google DeepMind works with governments through the National Partnership for AI initiative to expand access to cutting-edge AI capabilities and help ensure they are deployed to serve the public and meet national priorities in science, education, resilience, and public services.

Building on our collaboration with the US and UK governments, we are establishing new partnerships with government and local agencies in India. In the global AI transformation, India is showing extraordinary leadership in applying its technology to tackle its biggest challenges. But India is going further, playing an important international role this week by hosting the 4th Global AI Summit of governments, businesses and civil society. International dialogue and cooperation will build the global framework needed to drive positive impact and prepare societies for an AI future.

Partnership in India expands access to AI

Our partnership is designed to accelerate the pace of progress across India. Here are some of the ways we are working together to unlock new possibilities in science and education.

advances in scientific progress

Google DeepMind, Google Research, and Google.org are partnering with Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) to accelerate the adoption of AI models to advance science. We provide access to cutting-edge AI for Science models, support hackathons and community competitions, and enable training and mentorship for students, researchers, and people early in their careers.

Researchers and engineers in India will now be able to use our AI tools, including:

AlphaGenome: AI models that help scientists better understand how variations in human DNA sequences affect a wide range of gene functions AI Co-scientist: A multi-agent AI system that acts as a virtual scientific collaborator Earth AI: A collection of models built on Gemini’s advanced reasoning that helps businesses, nonprofits, and cities with everything from environmental monitoring to disaster response

Scientists around the world are already accelerating discovery using AlphaFold, our AI system that can accurately predict the structure and interactions of proteins, DNA, RNA, ligands, and more. India is the fourth country in the world to adopt AlphaFold, with more than 180,000 researchers currently using AlphaFold. We expect Indian scientists to further benefit from using AlphaGenome and other AI systems we currently offer.

We are also committed to supporting AI in science at a global level. That’s why today at the India Summit, we announced the $30 million Google.org Impact Challenge: AI for Science for researchers, nonprofits, and social enterprises in India and around the world. Achieve scientific advances using AI. Selected winners will also have the opportunity to join the Google.org Accelerator and receive engineering support, expert guidance, and infrastructure from Google DeepMind and Google Research to turn their concepts into scalable discoveries.

Empowering India’s students and teachers with an AI-powered future

A recent study with Ipsos found that learning is the number one driver for using AI around the world. This is especially true in India. India currently leads the world in the daily use of Gemini by students. We find that when AI is purpose-built for learning and implemented as a supporting partner for educators, it can foster deep understanding and critical thinking.

At City Montessori School in Lucknow, teachers are incorporating guided learning into mathematics lessons for grades 8-9 and are seeing a positive response. Early analysis of randomized controlled studies conducted by Fab AI shows that students want deeper learning, not just easy answers. In almost 3 out of 4 Gemini conversations, students were looking for deeper understanding rather than easy answers or shortcuts.

That’s why we are expanding our efforts with additional partners to increase learning possibilities for more Indian students and teachers.

Power your innovation hub with GenAI assistants: In collaboration with Atal Tinkering Labs, which serves over 10,000 schools and 11 million students in India, we will help you build a securely guardrailed student AI assistant based on national curriculum standards that can integrate robotics and coding into local curricula, thoughtfully integrate Gemini into teacher workflows, and serve as an educational partner. Teachers can access real-time tips to fix a robot’s missing part with readily available materials or repair a broken circuit design by simply pointing the camera at the robot or asking Gemini in chat. Gemini, India’s K-12 textbook publisher, will be used to transform 2 million static textbooks into AI-powered interactive learning across over 250 titles and 2,000 schools. Each book has a QR code that students can scan to access a custom Gem (a specialized version of the Gemini AI model). Gem acts as an expert assistant on the subject, providing summaries and answers about the content of each book. Addressing India’s linguistic diversity: AI has incredible potential to positively impact education when built in close collaboration with experts and based on local languages and cultures. Building on Google.org’s recent $2 million founding gift to establish a new Indian Language Technology Research Hub at IIT Bombay, we will help incorporate India’s linguistic diversity into AI as it advances globally.

These efforts build on the global success of existing AI literacy programs, such as Experience AI, a joint partnership developed by Google DeepMind with the Raspberry Pi Foundation, which has already reached up to 300,000 students and 8,000 teachers in India.

AI solutions for India’s agriculture and energy sectors

Our new partnerships in science and education build on our continued collaboration with local organizations in India addressing global challenges in agriculture and energy security. Working with Indian startups, institutions such as the Council for Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), and Indian state and national government agencies are using freely available agricultural AI model APIs to improve agricultural resilience, crop productivity, and farmer incomes. TerraStack also uses Google AI to combine satellite, crop, and weather data to generate hyperlocal insights to help farmers make better agricultural decisions.

We also recently announced an expanded collaboration with Open Climate Fix to integrate WeatherNext AI models into India’s power grid operations. We aim to significantly improve the accuracy of renewable energy forecasting in India, help grid operators manage variability, and support the country’s ambitious clean energy goals. We tested WeatherNext’s integration with OCF’s wind power forecasts and found up to an 8% improvement in forecast performance accuracy.

The partnership comes as India rapidly expands its renewable energy footprint, becoming the world’s third largest producer of solar energy by 2023 and setting an ambitious goal of installing 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030. Collaborating on energy solutions is more important than ever. We remain committed to working with experts in India to advance this effort together to prepare for the future.

prepare for the future together

AI’s global impact is inevitable, but so is its success. To turn potential into prosperity, we are deepening our regional collaboration with Indian government agencies and institutions to ensure that AI delivers tangible results across the subcontinent and around the world.
