Adam Mosseri warns against AI slop on Instagram

As artificial intelligence continues to evolve at breakneck speed, social media platforms are facing new and disturbing challenges as the line between what is real and what is generated is rapidly disappearing. Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has now publicly acknowledged this shift, warning that the platform may soon need to label AI-generated content and further verify what is genuine to maintain trust in the digital ecosystem.

In a detailed 20-slide post shared on Instagram, Mosseri reflected on how generative AI has transformed content creation in just a few months. Powerful tools are now available to almost anyone, allowing them to create stunningly realistic images and videos with minimal effort. This proliferation has also led to what is commonly referred to as “AI slop,” or low-quality, low-effort content being produced at scale. But Mosseri emphasized that the bigger issue is not just quality, but reliability.

“For most of my life, I assumed that photos and videos captured almost exactly the moment that happened. This is clearly not the case now, and it will take years to adapt,” Mosseri wrote. He said users can no longer trust visual media at face value, as AI-generated content becomes indistinguishable from real moments.

He explained that social media users need to fundamentally change the way they consume content. “We start to be skeptical by assuming what we see is real by default, and paying attention to who is sharing it and why.” Mosseri also acknowledged how difficult this transition will be, adding, “It’s going to be uncomfortable. We’re genetically predisposed to trust our eyes.”

To address this growing challenge, Mosseri suggested specific steps Instagram may take in the near future. These include clearer labels for AI-generated content and systems to verify authentic posts. “We need to build the best creative tools, labeling AI-generated content and verifying what’s real,” he said, describing the current era of “infinite synthetic content.”

Looking ahead to 2026, Mosseri acknowledged that Instagram is at a critical crossroads. “The main risk facing Instagram is that the world is changing so rapidly that the platform won’t be able to keep up,” he said, warning that one of the most significant changes is that “authenticity is becoming infinitely repeatable.” This means that nearly every aspect of online identity and creativity can now be convincingly faked with the right AI tools.

Despite those concerns, Mosseri was careful to strike a balanced tone. He pointed out that not all AI-generated content is worthy of criticism. “We like to complain about ‘AI lag,’ but there’s a lot of great AI content,” he said, acknowledging that AI creativity has also given rise to new forms of expression and entertainment.

The commercial potential of such content is already clear. According to recent reports, Indian AI-driven YouTube channel Bandar Apna Dost has earned around Rs 35 million, highlighting how large audiences are embracing synthetic content.

Ultimately, Mosseri made it clear that adaptation is no longer optional. “Instagram is going to have to evolve in different ways, and quickly,” he concluded, hinting at a future in which the platform actively helps users navigate a world where seeing is no longer believed.
