Instagram chief talks about how AI will change Instagram in 2026

The head of Instagram talked about AI, reliability, and trustworthiness. Here’s what artists and creators need to know heading into 2026.

AI content is already here, and Instagram chief Adam Mosseri says it will fundamentally change the way people create, share and trust content on the platform in the coming years.

Mosseri announced his thoughts on Instagram:

Find out what AI will change on Instagram by 2026 and what artists and creators should be paying attention to now.

What does AI look like on Instagram?

As we’ve already seen in the music industry, AI-generated photos and videos are already flooding social media platforms. Some of it looks decidedly artificial, and most AI content to date is too slick, too perfect, too polished. But that visual perk doesn’t last long.

As Mosseri points out, AI is rapidly advancing to the point where it can generate any aesthetic. This includes raw content that feels human and authentic. In other words, the visual line between real and fake can quickly disappear.

What this means for creators

In the past, creators stood out simply because they could create. They have an authentic voice, which helped them create a real connection with their audience. But AI has changed that equation.

Now, with the right tools, almost anyone can generate content that looks and sounds compelling. According to Mosseri, this represents a major shift for creators from asking, “Can I create?” “Can you make something that only you can make?”

This makes creators even more important. As AI content explodes, trust is key. People want to see content that feels real, and we’re already seeing this change happening. In recent years, rawer aesthetics and production styles have become increasingly popular across content production. In fact, live content is perceived by viewers as more real.

But this too has its pitfalls. Because at some point, AI will be able to recreate this authentic, raw style. When this time comes, the focus must shift again from what is being said to who is saying it. This is where the relationship of trust between creators and viewers becomes important.

Therefore, going forward, creators who can feel the human touch will be the winners. For artists and creators, that means continually going to venues, connecting with fans, and trying to build artist-fan relationships.

What this means for users

For a long time, social media has had an implicit assumption that photos and videos capture real moments. That too is disappearing though. Mosseri suggests that we are moving toward a world where skepticism must be our starting point. Users need to think more critically about what they’re seeing, who’s sharing it, and why.

How does Instagram plan to handle AI?

Instagram isn’t ignoring this issue. Mosseri said platforms will continue to work on labeling AI-generated content, but he also notes that identifying fake media will become more difficult as AI improves.

So far, the platform has focused on AI content labeling. For example, Deezer was the first streaming platform to pioneer AI music tagging. But Mosseri suggests changing the approach. It may be more practical to verify genuine content than trying to detect fake content. For example, camera manufacturers can cryptographically sign images the moment they are taken, creating a chain of custody.

However, they also point out that labeling alone is not enough. Platforms should also provide more context about the accounts themselves, including who is behind each account.

final thoughts

Mosseri ultimately made it clear that AI is forcing Instagram to evolve rapidly. However, creators and artists must also evolve with it. As content generation becomes easier, authenticity becomes key. However, when that becomes replaceable, trust between creators and viewers becomes even more important.

Understanding this shift early will help us cut through the AI noise in 2026 and beyond. Because when everything can be produced, being real is the only thing that can set you apart.
